This is a beautiful Holbrook meteorite. Purchased from an estate in Holbrook, Arizona. Most Holbrook meteorites found are very small, almost pea size. However masses weighing as much as 6.6 kg (14.5 lbs) have been recovered from the strewn field.

This purchase comes with a copy of the receipt we received from the estate. This purchase also comes with a copy of a pamphlet we created about the Holbrook meteorite fall while researching this item. The pamphlet includes information + photos of other Holbrook meteorites. We also looked at the magnetic susceptibility of these and include the reference document we utilized, for you as well.

Holbrook is a very well known meteorite. This meteorite is classified as an L/LL6 ordinary Chondrite. As a note: Only 28 meteorites have ever been approved as L/LL6 making this classification rare. The Holbrook meteorite broke up and all the pieces crashed onto Earth in spectacular fashion on 19 July 1912. The fall started with a loud blast followed by smaller explosions and a protracted rumble which lasted roughly 2 minutes, in the early evening (Foote, 1912; Merrill, 1912; Banks and Benny, 2001). Many pieces fell in a large strewn field (area from which meteorite fragments are recovered) along the Santa Fe railway line, extending for at least 6 miles (10 km) to the east of the town of Holbrook in Navajo county, Arizona.

The heaviest concentration of fragments was recovered around the Aztec railway yard. After the meteorite shower, more than 14,000 fragments were eventually recovered, varying in size from sand grains to masses weighing 6.6 kg (Mason and Wiik, 1961; Norton, 1994; Grady, 2000, pp.240-241), for an estimated total mass near 218 kg.
