Soapstone is a soft rock used by humans as far back as the stone age. A metamorphic rock primarily composed of talc with varying amounts of other minerals, it is soft and very easy to carve, nonporous, nonabsorbent, has low electrical conductivity, is heat resistant, and is resistant to acids and alkalis.

It has been carved by peoples as divergent as the Inuit, the Vikings, Ancient Cretans, Ancient Egyptians, North American Indians, and the Yoruba people of West Africa.
