A smudge stick is a bundle of herbs often used in some traditional North American indigenous cultures. The bundle is burned ceremonially or ritually. The exact process and meaning of the burning varies from culture to culture, but usually involved connecting the material and spiritual realms through the smoke released from burning the smudge stick. The released smoke creates a cleansing smoke bath, which can then purify anything including people, tools and objects, and ritual and ceremonial space
Other cultures also burn smudge sticks, but it is most often associated with North American indigenous cultures, in which it is an ancient and sacred ritual.
Each of the ingredients has a different use. Sage can be used to drive out the negative and the sweetgrass to attract the positive. Sage can also be used for keeping sacred objects safe from negative influence. The Sioux nation kept the Sacred Pipe in a bundle with sage boughs. Some people also protect crystals in the same manner.
Cedar is often for praying to the Great Spirit in meditation and blessing a home before taking residence there, a tradition that dates to the Northwest and Western Canadian Native Americans. It also purifies and attracts good energy.
